About Michael Maury
Michael Maury is a self-taught artist whose work exists at the tension between light and the consuming dark. Born in Italy and raised surrounded by the profound legacy of Italian art, his creative voice was shaped early on by an instinctual connection to classical grandeur and visual drama. His artistic journey evolved organically through foundational years exploring the precision of colored pencil and the immediacy of acrylics, ultimately leading him to oil painting—now his primary medium—where he found the depth and fluidity necessary to fully realize his vision.
Working within a contemporary fusion of dramatic botanical realism and modern tenebrism, Maury renders luminous floral subjects that seem to will themselves into existence — emerging from deep, moody atmospheres as if illuminated by some interior conviction.
His practice is rooted in the chiaroscuro tradition, yet reinterpreted through a deeply personal lens: for Maury, light is not a technical device but a philosophical stance. It arrives not from a lamp or a window, but from a place of inspiration — something felt before it is seen. The result is a body of work in which flowers become more than subject matter. They are luminous presences, fragile and insistent, carved from shadow by the act of looking closely and caring deeply.
Unbound by formal training, Maury's voice is entirely his own — shaped by instinct, observation, and an ongoing dialogue with the Old Masters that have surrounded him since childhood. His paintings carry the weight of that lineage while remaining unmistakably contemporary: intimate in scale, monumental in atmosphere.
